I am passionate about and have a background in the study of Intuitive and Taoist arts that are rooted in harnessing the power of the subtle body, emotions and intuition. My Abstract paintings are born from this place of awareness, wonder, inquiry and opening up to something much bigger than myself.
Like the Surrealist painters of the Modernist movement – Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Andre Breton - I engage in a process similar to what they termed ‘automatic drawing.’ That is, I often approach the canvas with no purpose or plan of what will come about, but allow for a question, situation, feeling or theme to act as the inspiration, and simply see what unfolds. This process acts as a structure for me to have a dialogue with, or understand, what is going on underneath the surface by accessing the intuitive and subconscious mind, thereby giving form to the formless. From here, the composition emerges.
Having grown up in Northern California and living in Marin County for the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of being surrounded by nature in all its glory. Many of my Contemporary and Landscape paintings come from this wonderful connection with land, the elements and the life force found in nature.
I allow for the imprints of nature and life experiences to find their way onto the expressive playing field of the canvas by using color, texture and layering, symbols, gestural marks and composition.
